Data protection training for newly-elected principle authority councillors

This two hour interactive workshop will provide newly-elected Members with an introduction to key data protection principles and practices, from the perspective of a principle authority councillor.

The course concentrates on;

  • An exploration of personal data (and what it constitutes)
  • The principles of data protection
  • Legal bases for the processing of data, specifically concerning application for councillors.
  • Consideration of different data protection ‘worlds’ in which councillors operate
  • Separating roles and responsibilities for processing council-owned data, data w
  • Understanding the importance of using/adhering to council-provided processes.
  • Consideration of Freedom of Information and understanding which data could be subject to council FOI requests.

What’s Included;

  • A Pre-call with relevant lead officer or Monitoring Officer, to understand local context
  • Remote course, delivered on MS Teams or Zoom
  • Detailed handouts are provided for Members at the end of the session.
  • Post training, Q&A session

Data protection refresher training for principle authority councillors

In this (also two hour) interactive workshop, we will provide existing Members with a refresher of data protection, relevant to their role.

This course concentrates on;

  • Refreshing understanding of data protection of the role of a principle authority councillor.
  • We will consider the importance of making use of and adhering to council-provided systems and processes.
  • Best practice for carrying out various tasks as local councillors from a data protection perspective.
  • This session will also touch on Freedom of Information and understanding what data could be subject to council FOI requests.
